If you want to shrink something,
you must first allow it to expand.
If you want to get rid of something,
you must first allow it to flourish.
If you want to take something,
you must first allow it to be given.
This is called the subtle perception
of the way things are.
― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
Dedicated to those who wander.
Having and lacking, topic old as the ego. To gain and to lose. Subject wide as the galaxy. What do we lose when we obtain, and vice versa? Who knows?
Time to get going. It’s time to start asking your answerless questions. It’s time to search for food, like every other day. It’s time to survive – like every other day.
How long have been since you lost your home? Your money? Every friend? Since you lost everything? You don’t remember anymore. Days go by, weeks pass. Months lined up, one after another, and out of them years sprouted. How many? Three, five, ten? You don’t remember.
Wake up, wake up! Don’t you feel, your body is hungry? Before long you should start foraging the dustbins. Oh, I see. You don’t want food. You just fake it. You don’t accept gifts of charity, nor donations. You don’t even beg. The other beggars like you dig, search and do whatever it takes – just for a change, some food, a cigarette, some alcohol. You gave up all of that. Surviving on a crust of bread every now and then, just to get by. Drinking from pots and puddles, except for when you get extremely jolly. Then you will use the fountain, like on a feast.
What are you staring at? Don’t look other people in the eyes, you’re not like them. Look at yourself! A hobo. The others are tidy and neat, talking with their friends on brand new phones. They’re in a hurry to get a job done. And what are you getting done? Nothing. You gave up everything.
Why did you do it? No one noticed how, slowly, you gave it all up. First you gave away almost all of your clothes and furniture, all spare stuff. All the souvenirs, gifts, pictures. After that you got rid of the useful belongings – phones, computers, cameras… You quit your job and sold your big apartment. “Summer is coming, I will be sleeping outside, traveling” – you was saying to your friends. Right before you got rid of them, too. The false ones left as they saw you loosing all your possessions. The true ones you chased away when you acted cold and offensive. The same you did to your closest ones.
Then you spent all your money. You didn’t care if the others will judge it as “good” that you’re donating it, or as “bad” if you spent it on booze and drugs, so you did both. When you ran out of money you start living truly…
As you lost everything you started wandering. With the few cloths, a sleeping bag and no money. In an attempt to lose everything that’s left, that is yourself.
Why did you do it? No one understood. No one saw through your higher purpose. People thought you’re nuts, that you lost it. You did it slowly, so they will forget without any drama. Because you didn’t do it for them, you did it for yourself.
Now the sun is setting. “Normal” people are getting home with their families. But you, the man with nothing, you don’t have a place to go. Choose a park. Choose a lawn…
So… what did you learn those days? Is your experiment complete? All those years you devoted to seeing what is it like to have nothing? To lack? To lose? Did you get it? Why people fear it so much?
To not have. To miss. To suffer a loss. Why do they fear it so much? Even the small things? Funny stuff like a phone, a jacket? Like shame or the approval of others. Things that won’t be here tomorrow.
Or more significant. A car, a house, a business? Or a home, a chance, freedom. Did you try everything? Did you lose your family, your career, your social standing? Did you understand why they fear it so much? Did you lose everything?
So… in order to fully understand you need me. That’s why you summoned me, didn’t you? Is it why you wished me? It is time to realize. What do you gain when you lose everything? When you lose even… your life. Are you ready?
You’re in the park, yet you found a cozy place. That’s a must, I demand respect. Your moves become slow, ceremonial. Every moment becomes priceless, because there is nothing else, except for that moment. There is nothing to think of except for here and now. For the breathing. For what is present in the split second. So, that’s what you gained? What you realised. Well done, you surprised me! But still, you’re not content, the experiment is not finished yet. That’s why you called for me. What is left is to leave your last possession.
I see you’re ready. This is the last step, you will now see. In order to give you everything, I will first take it away. All of it. Close your eyes…
– Thank you…
In a world, where madness is wealth, abundance and freedom… here peace dwell.
